conventions of our short film

 One of the conventions that we have used in our short film is a twist and this is the part where the audience realises it was all a dream that Selima had and the friends with her were not real it was all a dream. we created this by having a distorted effect on the clips to show that its not all clear and its faded so it gives off the dreamy effect.

Another convention that we have used is creativity and we have used this by creating effects on the short film such as transitions that take us from one scene to the next and then our storyline is also creative as we have created a hallucinating type of film where she believes that all her friends have been with her even after the car accident that they had. Adding music in the background was also creative as we changed the beat and the volume of the music to fit in with the scenes.

our last convention that we have used is emotion, during the short film there are many emotions being shown such as " happiness, sadness, anger" there are emotions being used throughout the short film when she realises that her friends have been dead for a year now and she has just been mourning over them as she's not quite still over the death of her friends.

REGULATIONS IN OUR SHORT FILM 

One regulation for our short film was having permission to film in another persons house which we had, simonas mum had allowed us to come over and film inside her house as she was the nearest one who lives local. we needed her permission to film because if we didn't have this then we would not be able to film and we would have to go to someone else house.  

we also filmed in seven kings park and as this was a public space we did not need any permission to film so we went along and filmed our picnic scene in the park.

There were no weapons used in our short film as this was mainly made for teenagers and kids so we avoided any use of sensitive content that may offend the audience.

To create these shots what we did was we changed the camera settings such as the ISO, Shutter speed and the exposure,  for the bedroom scenes what we did was we increased the ISO in order to create a bright lighting for the scene as filming indoors created a dim light so increasing ISO helped us to make the shots clearer making sure everybody is in the shot.  We also changed the aperture of the camera so we know how much light we should let in the camera, for some scenes like the picnic scene and the clips of the park we needed more light to be in the camera as we couldn't take portable lights outside so turning up the aperture we were able to achieve the shots that we wanted to be bright and clear.

Evidence of using pre production material

Me and Khairun and simona looked kept referring back the script when we were filming while directing. We made sure to follow the script but change things where it is needed. Such as changing the dialogue to make it sound more dramatic or to adhere more to the way the cast speaks in their daily life to keep it realistic. We also tried to remember our lines as we were acting too and help our cast remember theirs. We also gave the script to the cast and summarised to them about what this short film 'Hallucinations' would be about to help them get a better understanding. This helped them add their way of looking at the film, helping them perform better. One challenge we faced while filming was that we had to keep going back into my room to check the script, so to avoid that long process we just took a picture of the script, helping us save time.

Use of filming production

In our first week of filming when we used our DSLR camera to film Hallucination , we set up the camera and the tripod to the correct hight and distance to be able to get the footage that we needed. Although we used camera and tripod to film we also had to create good lighting scenes and in order to do this we used 3 point lighting and a portable light that was given to us , even with the light we used our mobile phone torches to help us.

Here we used the portable light given to us which we turned on swell as using natural lighting.

After filming all of our scenes within a week we had to put it in final cut pro however when we listened back to it some of the audio wasn't loud enough and you couldn't hear the actors so we used a microphone to make voice overs of the parts that weren't as clear. 

We had to film the picnic scene many times because of the lighting outside we needed it to look clear and be focused, we tried to create an effect of Simon being able to sit down with her dead friends and talk about what they will do in the future. We used a tripod to create a still recording of the picnic scene. The food they are eating in the picnic just represents how they are as friends as they are all different but together they are really good and I just feel like showing the audience that they were close means a lot and that Selma losing her friends impacted her a lot and thats why she can't get over the fact that they died a year ago.

 

So here in these two pictures we have used 3 point lighting in order to create shadows on each of the characters and to allow Simona the main character of the film to be the most lit up along with me who is having the conversation with simona. Using these lights helped us create a more cinematic shot for our film because of 

we couldnt get the shots that we wanted beforeas we couldnttake the equipment outside of school however we were able to film in the classroom with the equipment that was brought in by one of the teachers in order to help accomplish our lighting scene to make it cinematic

Analysing films

Film 1 : Post it love 

The setting in this film is the office which is typical for most short films even as their opening. This is effective as it lets the audience know where this film is taken place and it gives a sort of idea what the film would be about.

 Another convention is in this film is the theme. This short film has the romance theme and at 0.30 onwards the audience can see that these two are in sync and from 0.40 they both try to catch each other looking at the same time. The director has used this to allow the audience to see that this is about romance and that the two workers are clearly trying to get each others attention.

The lighting in this film is high key because the colours are shown very clearly and its very bright. The director has used this effectively to show the viewers this film is a romance and nothing dangerous will happen in it as its just two people trying to get each others attention by using post its.

Another convention in this film is the twist. At 2.27 the main character has made a big gesture and created a portrait of the both of them to surprise her and she was left shocked when she. saw what he had done. The director has effectively use this for the audience so when the audience and the female character saw this they feel the cute moment and would be feeling really giddy.

Another convention is the characters. As you can see in this short film there is only 2 main characters that are involved in this. The director has used this effectively as he had pay an Impact on the viewers as this short film shows the romance between the 2 people 

Film 2 : INSIDE

The convention used in this short film would be the characters as you can see from 2.55 onwards the characters are on different sides of the room and there are multiple characters who are all different as they are all struggling with split personality.This convention is effective as it lets the audience know who the main characters are.

Another convention would be the twist in the film as the women who are the main character is talking to could be the therapist at 4:40 or it could be them speaking to a random voice that he has made up in his mind. The director has effectively used this as the audience would not have expected it as they would think it was a real person.

The lighting in this short film toward the end has stayed at a low key lighting as they are inside a mental hospital so there wouldn't be colourful lights and bright lighting and everyone is not happy in there so it has to be set as a dull tone.

Another convention is themes and this one is a sort of mystery as around 0.50 the audience can see all the main characters as they are walking with a lot of people that were not there before and soon we realise that those people are his multiple personalities that he has and this impacts the audience as they can now see what happens next and where he goes. with all these personalities.

FILM 3: LUXO JR

The first convention of this short film would be the setting. This short film setting looks like it is in a dark room and the pixar light is on a desk or a table and this just lets the viewers know where the short film is taking place.

Another convention is the theme. the theme for this short film would be animation as all the actions and objects are animated they have used a stop motion style to create this animated look for the film.

The lighting is another convention and here we can care that there is low-key lighting which is used to create the bright effect of the lamp so it stands out next to the mini lamp.
